This week US comedy website Punchline and magazine Paste published their lists of the best comedy albums and best comedians of the year respectively. While there are a few familiar names on these lists it’s always nice to have a few new ones to investigate.
Two that managed to pop up in both Top 10s were Kyle Kinane and Hannibal Buress. Kinane was completely new to me but he has a suitably offbeat charm (plus the now customary ‘comedy beard’) that’s made me want to find out more.
Meanwhile I’d heard lots of talk about Buress, due in no small part to his current roles as a writer for SNL and 30 Rock. From the admittedly limited amount of material I’ve seen, the hype around him, not just as a writer but as a stand-up, certainly seems justified. A pitch-perfect blend of Mitch Hedberg and Dave Chappelle, if you’re looking for a good ‘I-heard-them-first’ name to drop (and who doesn’t) then Buress might just be the man for you.
