It’s things like Comedy Lab that make me want to pat Channel 4 on the back and give them a hearty hand shake (didn’t get quite the same feeling watching the Sharon Osbourne Comedy Roast but never mind). It’s here they show their ability to find and nurture new comic talent. So along come another batch of sketch shows, sitcoms and… miscellaneous.
Top of the pile is Penelope Princess of Pets, already a viral hit it’s the work of Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunohler. If the existing youtube shorts are a marker of what we can expect then it’ll be a surreal, hilarious, Dr Dolittle on a 2p budget. To add a little extra spice to the mix the cast also includes the excellent Julian Barratt, Isy Suttie and Daniel Kitson.
Others to look out for would be Happy Finish a sketch show made in collaboration with Funny or Die and featuring Mike Wozniak and Sara Pascoe, Movie Mash with Dan Renton Skinner (a.k.a. Angelos Epithemiou) and Filth, a sitcom set within a lads magazine. Bit of a curiosity, on the one hand it features Danny Dyer playing an aggressive uber-lad (can’t have been a stretch Danny?) and the material/casting of James Buckley may draw quick comparisons to The Inbetweeners. But then it was written by one half of fast-rising circuit double act The Sunday Defensive, so who knows?
What Channel 4 opts to take further is anyone’s guess but if that line-up’s anything to go by they’ll certainly be spoilt for choice.
