On Thursday (30th September) it was announced that US comic Greg Giraldo had died, aged 44, after a suspected accidental overdose of prescription painkillers. I can’t pretend I was a fan of all his work – the ‘celebrity roasts’ he became such a fixture of have never been to my taste – he was still a talented stand-up and 44 is far too young to go. With content and style not a million miles from Bill Hicks, Giraldo used his act to skewer American society and its perceived ills – religion, obesity, drug laws etc. While he never had the UK crossover success that Hicks did, he gained more of an audience in 2004, when he featured in the spoken-word Lazyboy song, “Underwear Goes Inside the Pants“, which gained a great deal of airplay from Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley and broke into the UK Top 40.
If you haven’t heard him before why not check him out, you might enjoy.
