I love hip-hop and, like almost every major or minor music website in the world, for the past 6-9 months I’ve been losing my metaphorical shit over a mob of teenage degenerates called Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, or Odd Future for a short. If you missed the memo Odd Future (that’s Tyler, The Creator, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, the MellowHype team of Left Brain and Hodgy Beats and a good few others) have a propensity to give away their albums for free online, each one packed with the kind of violent, depraved tales of sex and drugs that would make Doug Stanhope splutter. Essentially Larry Clark’s Kids kick-flipping off the screen and into your stereo. And it just so happens they’re hilarious.
With that in mind it was only a matter of time before comedy tried to grab some of those hype dollars. It was announced this week that the Odd Future crew are turning their dark comic minds on a pilot for Adult Swim, billed as a cross between ‘Jackass and The Chappelle Show’. Right. A fantastic fit for Adult Swim but what exactly does that look like? Well you could check out their grim homage to Knoxville et al in the video for Earl or, perhaps more realistically, the video they recently made for Funny or Die (below). They’ll no doubt have some more professional help putting together a whole show but like them and their music I think we can expect something juvenile, woozy and frightening but nevertheless exciting, unpredictable and potentially brilliant.
