Submarine

The story of a young man trying to lose his virginity has been a touchstone for countless comedies down the years. In the wrong hands the subject matter can be saccharine, crude but, more often than not, painfully unfunny. However in the hands of someone like Richard Ayoade you may have something very different. The directorial debut of the Garth Marenghi/IT Crowd star (who also wrote the screenplay), Submarine has already gathered a plethora of plaudits on the film festival circuit. From the clips released so far it looks like a suitably quirky indie comedy, dark but with plenty of potential crossover appeal, ultimately something that could establish Ayoade as an even bigger player in UK comedy – and that’s just for starters. Submarine is released through Warp Films on March 18th. Here’s the trailer:
